Mental Stretches: The Personality Disorders Program

This is our first course, which is nearing completion and will be released very soon. As the name implies, this is a course about treatment of personality disorders.

I've been working with clients with personality disorders in my practice for over 15 years now, and have provided supervision to dozens of psychologists around working with clients in this cohort. This is a highly rewarding area in which to work, and I believe that understanding the tools to effectively treat clients with personality disorders leads to significant improvement in treatment strategies with nearly every client presentation.

The Mental Stretches program I have developed for Personality Disorders is designed to provide an accessible entry-point to working effectively with clients with personality disorders, regardless of the clinical setting in which you work or therapeutic models you use. It is designed to help you apply the techniques you are already familiar and comfortable with to achieve real, functional gains in clients with a range of personality disorder presentations.

The program is divided into two components — an introductory course, and an advanced course:

Mental Stretches: Introduction to the Personality Disorders Program

This is the introductory course, which covers:

  • what a "personality disorder" is
  • the process for diagnosing a personality disorder within the traditional ICD-10 and DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria
  • an introduction to the alternative DSM-5-TR dimensional model for personality disorders
  • a background on neuroplasticity and its relevance to the development and treatment of personality disorders
  • a neuroplasticity-informed formulation and treatment model for personality disorders, based on the DSM-5-TR dimensional model

Mental Stretches: The Personality Disorders Program (Advanced)

In the advanced course you will build on the skills and concepts gained in the introductory course to learn, in detail, how to select and employ specific intervention strategies to address specific impacted areas of personality functioning in your clients. The course introduces specific intervention tools suitable for addressing specific treatment needs in this client group. But, more crucially, it guides you through understanding how to identify when a particular intervention strategy will be suitable for achieving a specific outcome with this cohort. Furthermore, it will provide valuable insights regarding pacing therapy in a way that maximises client engagement, retention and outcomes.
